Best Soldier Honoured at Show

A soldier who rejoined the service after ten years out has been named as Best Soldier with an award at the Great Yorkshire Show.

The Best Soldier Award is made annually to member of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment, with a presentation in the Main Ring.

This year’s honours go to 38-year-old LCpl Kopamees from Hull, who rejoined the Army Reserve in 2016 after ten years out of the force. He started his military career with 1st Battalion the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire in 2001 and served until 2006 as a regular infantry soldier.

LCpl Kopamees rejoined the Army Reserve in 2016 with Alma Company, 4 YORKS in Hull. Shortly after completing his Army Reserve training, he was mobilised to deploy to Afghanistan on Operation TORAL 5 for a four-month deployment attached to 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.

On return to the UK, LCpl Kopamees completed the transition from Army Reserve to full time regular service and continued to serve with 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment in Catterick.
After serving four years with 2 YORKS, and a short posting to Cyprus Pte Kopamees returned to UK to serve with Kings Division Training Team in Wathgill, Catterick.

As a result of an Integrated Review, Pte Kopamees transferred from 2 YORKS to 1 YORKS and continued to serve in Catterick. Shortly after arriving at 1 YORKS, he was selected for promotion to Lance Corporal. During his career, LCpl Kopamees has conducted exercises in Morocco, Germany Belize and Cyprus as well and at home in United Kingdom.

In addition to the numerous exercises, LCpl Kopamees has deployed on operations to Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Nigeria. In recognition of his commitments, he has been awarded General Service Medal (GSM) Northern Ireland, Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (QPJM), Operational Service Medal (OSM) Afghanistan, and more recently His Majesty the King’s Coronation Medal.

LCpl Kopamees is married to Danielle and they have three children.
